"It'll never happen to me..."

Charity does start at home - thinking of how your loved ones would be affected should certain services be withdrawn due to funding, is a great incentive to dig deep into that pocket.

You work hard for your family. Your parents will probably have worked hard for you when you were growing up. You have a significant other or extended family members you love. If not family, you probably have friends who count instead. You have children that depend on you, and parents that always worry about you. You may have lost and you will inevitably lose again.

What's this got to do with charity fund-raising? Well the hope is that no one will ever have to use the services of a place such as Pendleside Hospice, which is so much more than "a place where people go to die", however we all know how truly cruel life can be and see terrible things happen to good people every day.pendleside hospice

When Vida Cade visited Pendleside Hospice (Sales & Marketing Exec at Padiham Glass), she was fully expecting to smell the clinical tang of disinfectant, to be irritated by florescent lighting and generally feel the hopelessness of what I assumed was a place, only for people who were at the end of their life.

"It was both surprising and truly comforting to find out that it isn't like that at all, " said Vida following her visit. She was privileged enough to spend a bit of time looking around the public areas (patient areas are strictly private) and was reassured to find that "it felt homely and calm, the lighting was cosy and rooms were warm and inviting, completely at odds with what I thought it would be."

Padiham Glass was invited (along with around 30 other businesses in Burnley and Pendle) to take part in the Hospice’s fund-raising initiative, their “Corporate Challenge” – the task is simply to raise as much money as possible for the charity (which costs £3.8million to remain operational every year) within a given time frame: 1 June to 30 September.

So what are we doing?

We have an exercise bike set up in the reception of our Head Office, kindly lent to us by Lifestyle Fitness Gym of Burnley and we are attempting to cover 1000 miles from Padiham to Prague with staff giving up their breaks and own time to pedal for Pendleside!

To go along with that, we have set up a JustGiving donation page and are trying to raise minimum of £1 per mile, which we think is completely achievable given that we have so many kind and generous customers, suppliers and co-workers!

We have a few additional things going on including a football match planned between our office and shopfloor lads, which goes well with our football shirt swap day between Blackburn Rovers and Burnley Clarets fans in addition to a raffle and sponsored walks so we are positive we’ll hit our fundraising targets!
